Squam Range Hike on 2011 Feb 6

Doug Anderson and I, both of Wayland, drove to the Squam Range and did Mt Morgan and Mt Percival, with a side trip almost to Mt. Webster, all about 2200'. The 3 miles or so to Mt. Webster and back was trail breaking. Doug, being young, did 90% of the plodding through untrodden snow with 6" to 24" depth. The remaining 5 miles was fairly compact, and we did most of it with microspikes. By the end of the day, the snow was getting soft near the base of 600'.

The day started near 28 deg F. Doug was confident . Our hike up was half with microspikes until we cayght up to the two guys ahead of us. The remainder was with snowshoes. Then we headed for Mt Webster, and Doug led most of the way through unbroken trail. Good blazes. Moose tracks. We turned around before reaching Mt Webster. Looking back later from Mt Morgan made it appear like we were close to Mt Webster when we turned around. Following a brief (standing) lunch at the trail junction, we doffed our snowshoes and continued with microspikes to Mt Morgan and Mt Percival. We took a majestic view in on Mt Morgan. Click on the panorama so it wil enlarge for best resolution. And here is a movie. Squam from Mt Morgan
